Who are Candidates?
- A good choice for anyone wanting to take some years off their appearance but are neither ready, nor require a surgical procedure such as a facelift.
- Often used in combination with other aesthetics applications.
What is Botox®?
Botox® is the most common aesthetic procedure in North America today. It is so versatile and adaptable that it is used in combination with many non-surgical and surgical procedures. It can temporarily reduce or eliminate wrinkles caused by years of muscle contraction. The areas most commonly treated with Botox Cosmetic® are the frown lines, crows feet on the sides of the eyes, forehead creases and bands in the neck. Botox® relaxes muscles causing the skin to appear smoother and refreshed.
What are the benefits of Botox®?
- A quick simple procedure performed by a physician with no downtime.
- Millions of procedures over the last 19 years have shown it to be a very safe.
- In the right hands, it allows for natural movement without the frozen look
- It is reversible and lasts three to four months.
How does Botox® work?
A sterile purified protein, Botox® has the ability to block the chemical neurotransmitter at the nerve-muscle junction. Minute amounts injected precisely into the targeted wrinkle causing muscle results in smoothening of the wrinkles. The result is not permanent since the nerve fibre regenerates a new connection in three to four months.
What is the treatment like?
After an assessment of your facial muscles and expression dynamics the physician will inject tiny amounts of Botox® into the chosen areas. It is essentially pain free and takes a few minutes to complete. Within a few days you will notice wrinkles being smoothed away in the targeted areas. An experienced physician will ensure that your expression is preserved by correctly reading your facial expression anatomy. Everyone is unique and different requiring slightly different placement and dosages of the injection. Botox® has no effect on the sensory nerves therefore there is no numbness or change in sensation. This is a common misconception.
The effects of Botox® last three to four months initially. At this time another injection is required to ensure an ongoing anti-aging effect. As time goes on the treatments can often be spaced further apart as the skin takes on a smoother appearance. Repeated use is truly anti-aging.
What are the most commonly treated areas?
The most common applications for Botox Cosmetic® are:
- the Glabellar Creases ( frown lines between the eyebrows)
- Crows Feet (wrinkles on the sides of the eyes)
- Forehead Wrinkles
Other Important Areas
Expert injectors of Botox Cosmetic® can also apply advanced injection techniques to other areas of the lower face including:
- Wrinkles of the Lips, (Alone or in combination with Injectable Fillers).
- The Marionette Lines (the downward turn and crease at the sides of the mouth), often called the mouth frown.
- Neck bands (turkey neck) or Necklace Lines (horizontal neck lines) which appear with age.
- Puckered irregular chin dimpling.
- Smile lines are not usually treated with Botox® but with Dermal Fillers such as Restylane™ or Juvederm® which preserves your natural smile.
What are the side effects?
Since the effect of Botox® lasts three to four months there are no known permanent side effects. It has been used safely for 19 years even in very young children in large doses for spastic cerebral palsy. There may be temporary minor side effects including:
- Tiny bruising at the site of injection. This can usually be avoided with careful application. It would be more common in patients on anticoagulants.
- Eyebrow or eyelid droop, this is usually mild (1-2mm) and only occurs in 1-2% of patients. It usually will last only 2-4 weeks.
- Botox® should not be used in pregnancy as it has not been tested in this context. There have been no reports of any problems with injections given to women who were unknowingly pregnant.
