Injectable Fillers
Restylane™, Juvederm™ and Teosyal™ are examples of Injectable Fillers. The plump appearance of healthy youthful skin is due to hyaluronic acid. As we age hyaluronic acid is lost with time, sun exposure and other factors and so the signs of aging; lines, creases and wrinkles become more apparent. The use of fillers helps to correct these signs by restoring volume and definition. These are often used in combination with other modalities such as Botox®.
What areas can be treated?
- Folds and wrinkles of the face
- Lips for enhancement and contouring
- Depressed Acne Scars
- Laugh lines (nasolabial folds)
- Marionette lines (depressed corners of the mouth), often used with Botox®)
- Volumetric filling of the sagging face due to gravity and loss of elasticity, often referred to as the Lunch-Time Facelift. Some doctors have named and trademarked these procedures e.g. VolumaLift™, RestaLift, Liquid Face Lift
Procedure Description
Restylane™ and Juvederm™ contain cross-linked hyaluronate, a natural substance already present in the human body, which plays an important role in giving firmness to the skin, shape to the lips and lubrication to the joints. Hyaluronate has the ability to attract body water molecules to help maintain volume. Synthesized hyaluronate is an identical replica of the bodys hyaluronate so it is pure and contains no animal product and can be used without any prior skin testing.
Injections are placed with a very fine needle under the skin. A topical anaesthetic is usually used to numb the skin. For some areas such as the lips a nerve block injection anaesthetic is used (like a dental needle). The results are seen right away. The cost of this procedure is dependent on the amount of filler used to achieve the desired result.
Depending on the area injected and the particular breakdown rate of the patient, the filler substance will last for several months before a repeat treatment is necessary. When completely absorbed the gel totally disappears without leaving any residual effect.
What are the Benefits
- Pure, human identical hyaluronate substance, no allergy testing required
- Long lasting but being a natural substance is not permanent
- Smoothes out folds and wrinkles
- Has a long history of safety, side effects are rare
Recuperation and Healing
For most patients the areas treated look normal within a few hours after injection of Hyaluronate containing fillers. Lip enhancement sometimes results in swelling for 3-4 days. If you have had multiple sites enhanced such as for the Volume Lift you may have bruising and a little swelling for about 3 days as well. Occasionally, bruising may last up to 14 days.
Other Options
Alternative options would include surgical lifting procedures such as a facelift or Threadlift . Fillers are often used in combination with Botox® to create the added synergistic effect of the two modalities.
Who is not a Candidate
