Botox Treatments for Hyperhidrosis
Who is a Candidate?
Anyone with excessive sweating of the underarms or hands that drips, stains clothing, interferes with writing, causes distress and interferes with your life. This common medical problem is present in 3% of the population.
Intended Results
For underarm sweating, results are usually excellent and will last anywhere from about 7-11 months depending on the individual. Sweating of the hands is very effective but since movement of the hands is far greater than the underarms the duration of action is not as long.
Procedure Description
Botox® is a biological molecule that has the ability to block the action of Acetylcholine at the nerve ending at the sweat gland. This is like temporarily turning off a light switch. The sweat gland does not respond to the nerve stimulus and therefore does not sweat. Before you have this procedure you require a medical consultation with a Physician to determine your diagnosis and best option for treatment. The procedure is very well tolerated and can be performed in 15 minutes on your lunch break. On the day of the procedure you should not use antiperspirant and should wear an old dark T-Shirt under your shirt/blouse. In order to perfectly identify the location of the sweat glands a special Iodine test is performed on the skin. The area of sweating is identified and mapped out. Tiny amounts of diluted Botox® are injected just under the skin in a sequential pattern. This procedure is very well tolerated using very fine needles.
Recuperation and Healing
There is absolutely no down time with this procedure, you may return to work immediately afterward. We require that you do not do any heavy physical exertion for about 4 hours after and you may wash off the Iodine stains with soap and water at this time. You should start to notice the results within 2-5days.
Other Options
Depending on your particular circumstances, other options for hyperhidrosis are strong topical antiperspirants, oral anticholinergic drugs, endoscopic sympathetctomy surgery and iontophoresis. These options will be discussed at your Physician consultation.
Insurance Guidelines
Most private insurance companies have recognized this as a medical condition and will cover a large portion of the fees. Your initial consultation is covered by OHIP.
