Chemical Peels

MD Aesthetics specializes in both Spa and Medical Grade Peels and after a full skin consultation individualises your treatment program. Deep chemical peels are no longer used and are replaced by much safer and improved Erbium Laser resurfacing.

Who’s a candidate?

Almost everyone from 20 to 80 could benefit from peels. However, advanced age, smoking, and excessive sun exposure can leave skin severely damaged, and superficial peels are not very effective in these cases. Anyone who has:
  • Acne
  • Fine lines
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Dull skin
  • Sun damage

What is a Chemical Peel?

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), betahydroxy-acids (BHAs), Fruit Acids, Trichloracetic acid (TCA) and Retinol’s are examples of compounds used for chemical “peeling” of the outer layers of the skin to improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, brighten your complexion, minimize pore size and diminish some acne scars. Most will have heard of Glycolic Peels, we no longer perform these although they are the most common superficial peel in Spas. We prefer to use blended peels, which are not as drying, and we use anti-oxidants, to protect and rejuvenate the skin. The peels we choose from may contain medical grade TCA, lactic acid (AHA), Salicylic Acids (BHA), Kojic and azeleic acids and Retinoids (prescription).

How is the procedure performed?

Your face is initially cleansed to remove any surface debris and the chemical peel is applied for a few minutes. You may have one to four applications depending on the type of peel and your skin condition. You will experience a mild to moderate stinging sensation. Some peels are self neutralizing while others will be washed off. You will receive post treatment instructions and told to avoid direct sun exposure. Once the body heals itself naturally, the outer layer of skin falls away. The post peel period will vary according to the type of peel from a very mild tinge of redness and light flaking to a period of peeling which can last up to 5 days. These effects diminish with time. It is very important not to pick at any shedding skin to avoid scaring or hyperpigmentation of your new skin.

Expected Results

Peels will result in softer smoother looking skin with improvement in texture and tone. Some cases will improve acne scaring and pigmentation. It is important that peels should be thought of as partially restorative but mostly a maintenance technique requiring repeated treatments over the course of time. They are repeated every few weeks for 4-6 sessions initially to achieve results and thereafter as required. Peels are often used with other treatments such as microdermabrasion and prescription anti-oxidant products to achieve maximal benefit.

Other Options

Other option will include our PhotoFacial PR rejuvenation protocol which is much more effective for most conditions, Laser MicroPeels and Resurfacing.
