Ultherapy is a new type of nonsurgical procedure that uses medical ultrasound to lift and tighten the face, neck, and other areas of the body. It works deep below the surface, without harming the outer layer of skin. Ultherapy belongs to a new generation of face lifting procedures. The depth of the sound wave penetration makes it possible to target the layers of tissue, which could be previously addressed only by surgery. This factor makes it stand out from a broad variety of non-invasive anti-aging treatments. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin below the chin. Tightening of the sagging skin on the cheeks helps smooth folds from nose to mouth, from mouth to jaws, and lifts the drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look . This no down time procedure (as featured on Dr. Oz) is performed in-office; treatment times range from 30 to 90 minutes per procedure depending on the area.
How does it work?
The Ultherapy® focuses high frequency sound waves under the skin causing collagen to contract resulting in lifting and tightening of loose skin. Acoustic imaging allows the technician to visualize the connective tissue to be treated and therefore precisely deliver the ultrasonic energy waves to the area requiring treatment. In some patients the tightening effect is immediately apparent; however, most tightening occurs over the next 3-6 months as new collagen is laid down in response to this micro-trauma. It is important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to facilitate the body’s reparative response.
While Ultherapy does not duplicate the amount of lifting achievable by surgery, Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery.
What does it feel like?
Many patients describe the sensation as momentary prickling and heat beneath the skin. Comfort levels vary from person to person. Most patients undergo the procedure without sedation or numbing medication. Some require a mild sedative like Ativan to reduce anxiety, while others may need a strong oral analgesic. These can be prescribed by the physician during the consultation. You will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home if you chose to take this medication prior to the procedure.
What can I expect after treatment?
You can return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear a bit flushed, but redness should disappear in a few hours. Mild tenderness is normal and indicates that healing is underway and new, healthier collagen is being generated.
Is Ultherapy safe?
Ultrasound energy has been used in the field of medicine for over 50 years, and clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this latest application. As with any medical procedure, there are general safety considerations which will be reviewed with you prior to treatment. It is exceedingly rare to have any permanent side effects caused by ultrasound.
What kind of results can I expect?
The regenerative process is initiated right away, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of three to six months. Patients experience tightening and lifting of areas such as the jowls, brows and neck.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?
A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone who is otherwise healthy but has a mild to moderate sagging of the jowls, brows, cheeks and neck (specifically turkey neck).
One of the first signs of aging is skin that feels less firm, with increased laxity, especially around the eyes. A good candidate for an Ultherapy eye/brow lift is someone with an uneven or lowered brow line, mild to moderate excess skin, and hooding on upper eyelids. The Ultherapy Brow Lift is a subtle corrective treatment utilizing focused ultrasound heat energy at just the right depths to activate the body's own collagen regeneration response, which tightens and lifts the skin. The result is a natural, more rested, energetic appearance.
