EVERYTHING you need to know about Dermal Fillers.

Dermal fillers can be highly effective for those looking to achieve smooth, youthful skin. When injected properly, they are designed to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and visible signs of ageing. Fighting the signs of ageing is a specialist treatment which requires a combination of healthcare knowledge and training to achieve the desired result. Unfortunately, not all Medi spas selling Dermal Fillers can provide this level of professionalism. Your face is a complex area with many underlying sensitive nerves and blood vessels, and we believe the person administering dermal fillers should be qualified to do so. At Copeland MD Aesthetics, Dr. Charles Copeland is the only injector, with over 20 years of experience.

Dermal Fillers are small hyaluronic gel injections, using a gel made of synthetic or natural substances, used to correct skin conditions by adding volume to soft tissue. Injected into the dermis layer of the skin, they can be used to fill in wrinkles, creases, and folds anywhere on your face – including around the eyes, cheeks, mouth and jawline. They can also plump lips. When injected correctly by an experienced physician like Dr. Copeland, it can also lift the face and stimulate collagen on many parts of the body.

Different kinds of Dermal Fillers
There are two main types of dermal fillers. Each provide different benefits and are best suited to certain to different issues/concerns.
1. Hyaluronic gel fillers are a natural substance. Hyaluronic gel is found in the eyeballs, joints, and skin. Capable of holding 1000x its weight in water, Hyaluronic fillers help to plump, maintain shape and hydrate. 80% of all fillers at Copeland MD Aesthetics are Hyaluronic Fillers.
2. The second type of filler is Radiesse, a unique filler that has CaHA (calcium hydroxyapatite). It helps build collagen in aging skin.  When injecting diluted Radiesse superficially under aging skin in a scaffold-like pattern, these injected lines provide a stronger structural support system for the skin. More importantly, this diluted filler acts as a biostimulator. This means that the filler stimulates the body’s own biomolecular mechanisms to create and lay down new collagen, elastin and create new capillaries for the purpose of rejuvenating skin and underlying tissue. This type of filler is used in lots of body areas like the hands, chest, knees, elbows, thighs, buttock. Read more about Collagen Builder Treatments.

How Dermal Fillers work
From the age of twenty-five onwards, our collagen and elastin levels (which help keep skin looking young) start to decline, causing a loss of volume. Dermal fillers are naturally occurring substances which are injected into the dermis with fine needles to add plumpness and restore lift. They replenish the natural collagen and elastin, which is not produced because of the ageing process, rejuvenating skin to make it appear firmer, younger, and fresher.

Longevity of Dermal Fillers
The effects usually last between six to 18 months - depending on how your body reacts and which type of filler is used. Once your desired look is achieved, it’s usually advisable to have a top-up treatment to maintain it. We recommend coming in every 6 to 9 months for minor top ups.

Dermal Fillers versus Botox
Dermal fillers are injected below wrinkles to plump and smooth skin for a youthful look. Botox freezes small muscles to prevent them from making the movements which cause wrinkles, like a frown or crows feet. Most often, both are needed.

Dermal Fillers can be corrected
In most cases, minor adjustments can be made to provide better balance or improve the overall appearance. If you're unhappy with the result, an enzyme can be injected to help dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers.

The proceedure
As with any needle procedure, patients may experience some slight discomfort whilst the filler is being injected. Anesthetic cream or lidocaine injections to freeze an area applied before treatment to create a numbing effect and alleviate discomfort.

Not suitable for the following candidates
Although dermal fillers are regarded as a safe aesthetic procedure, they are not suitable for:  Pregnant women, people with autoimmune diseases or when a person is sick, or just had a vaccine. One must wait at least 2 weeks after being sick or vaccinated.    At Copeland MD Aesthetics, this is why we believe it’s important to offer an in-depth consultation with a medical practitioner prior to treatment as it can help ensure which dermal filler is right for you. Sometimes, we also recommend similar or alternative treatments instead.  If you are planning to receive dental work or teeth whitening, it is advisable to leave at least week between each treatment as the pressure and stretching of the face could potentially misplace your dermal fillers.

Potential side effects
Swelling and redness is to be expected. Itching, bruising and tenderness may also occur at the injection location afterwards. These are natural reactions, mild to moderate in terms of discomfort, which should last a few hours but no more than a few days.  Tissue infection and sores are extremely rare. But as part of our aftercare service, we are on hand to help if any problems do arise. If necessary, antibiotics can be used should a problem escalate.
