BOTOX®

Relax. Refresh. Rejuvenate.

Neuromodulator injections—eg., Botox®, Dysport®, Nuceiva®—calm overactive muscles to reduce lines and preserve natural expression.

More About Neuromodulators

Facial expressions are part of who we are — but over time, the repeated contraction of facial muscles creates visible lines and creases. Neuromodulators (Botulinum toxin type A) work by gently relaxing these muscles, preventing them from contracting as strongly and allowing the overlying skin to smooth out.

Dr. Copeland takes a conservative, individualized approach to ensure natural, balanced results — never “frozen.” His goal is to rejuvenate without erasing character, preserving the integrity of your expression while restoring a rested, refreshed look.

There are several Health Canada–approved neuromodulator products available, for example, Botox® Cosmetic , Xeomin®, Dysport®, Nuceiva® (Jeuveau). Each product uses a similar active ingredient and works in a similar way, but with subtle differences in diffusion and onset time. Dr. Copeland will select the product and dosing based on your facial structure, muscle strength, and treatment goals.

Neuromodulator treatments are quick, safe, and effective. Results typically begin to appear within 3–5 days, with full effect at 10–14 days. The results gradually fade as muscle activity returns, usually around 3–4 months after treatment. Regular maintenance helps prevent deeper lines from forming and keeps results consistent over time.

What areas can be treated?

Neuromodulators are commonly used to treat:

  • Frown lines (glabella) between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Chin dimpling (“orange peel” chin)
  • Vertical neck bands (platysmal bands) in some patients
  • Jawline
  • Gummy smile
  • Lip Flip
  • Smoker's lines

They can also be used for medical indications such as migraine or excessive sweating, but those are assessed individually and may follow different dosing and guidelines.

Will I look frozen?

No. Dr. Copeland uses conservative dosing and precise placement to preserve natural movement. The goal is a rested, refreshed appearance—not a mask-like result.

What happens during the procedure?
  1. Consultation & assessment – Your physician reviews your concerns, medical history, and examines your facial expressions at rest and in motion.
  2. Cleansing & planning – The skin is cleansed, and injection points are mapped out.
  3. Injections – A very fine needle is used to place small amounts of neuromodulator into specific muscles. Most people describe it as a series of quick pinches.
  4. Post-care review – We review aftercare, expected onset, and when to book follow-up if needed.

Most neuromodulator appointments take 10–20 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated.

Am I a good candidate?

You may be a good candidate if:

  • You’d like to soften lines caused by repeated facial expressions (e.g., frowning, squinting, raising brows)
  • You are in generally good health
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have a history of certain neuromuscular or neurological conditions that would make treatment unsafe
  • You have realistic expectations and understand results are temporary and subtle

Your provider will review your medical history, medications, and past treatments to confirm if neuromodulators are appropriate for you.

What are the benefits of neuromodulators?
  • Smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by expression (frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines)
  • Help prevent lines from deepening over time with regular, conservative treatment
  • Non-surgical with no incisions or general anesthesia
  • Quick treatment with minimal downtime
  • Can create a more rested, approachable appearance while still allowing natural expression when dosed properly
Are neuromodulators safe?

When administered by qualified medical professionals using approved products, neuromodulators have a strong safety record and have been used in both medical and cosmetic settings for decades.

However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects, which may include:

  • Redness, swelling, or tenderness at injection sites
  • Mild headache
  • Temporary bruising
  • Temporary eyelid or brow heaviness or asymmetry if product diffuses into nearby muscles

Serious side effects are rare but can occur. You’ll receive a full discussion of risks and warning signs before treatment, and you should contact the clinic promptly—or seek urgent care—if anything feels concerning.

What should I expect after treatment?

Most people return to normal activities right after treatment. Common post-treatment advice:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for at least 4–6 hours
  • Avoid lying flat for 4 hours right after treatment (clinic-specific guidance may vary)
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for 24 hours
  • Makeup can typically be worn later the same day, as long as the skin is not irritated

Mild redness, small bumps at injection sites, or slight tenderness usually settle within a few hours.

When will I see results and how long will they last?
  • You may start to notice early softening of lines within 3–5 days.
  • Full effect is typically seen around 10–14 days after treatment.

On average, results last about 3–6 months, though this varies by individual, dose, treatment area, and product used.

Some people find that with regular, consistent treatments, their results last a little longer over time as the treated muscles are conditioned to stay more relaxed. Your injector will recommend a customized maintenance schedule based on your goals and how your body responds.
