Belkyra® (known as Kybella® in the U.S.) is a Health Canada–approved injectable treatment that uses deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body naturally produces to help break down dietary fat. When injected precisely into submental fat, it disrupts fat cell membranes. The body then gradually clears these cells through normal metabolic processes.

Once treated fat cells are eliminated, they cannot store fat again, making the reduction permanent—provided overall weight remains stable. Dr. Copeland performs all Belkyra® treatments using careful assessment, conservative dosing, and precise technique to ensure safe, balanced results.

What areas can be treated with Belkyra®?

Belkyra® is Health Canada–approved specifically for submental fat—the fullness under the chin. This is the only area where safety and effectiveness have been established through clinical trials. Any discussion of off-label use in other small fat pockets requires careful medical assessment and informed consent.
How does Belkyra® differ from liposuction?

Belkyra® is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction for the double chin. It does not require incisions, anesthesia, or recovery time, and results develop gradually rather than immediately. Liposuction removes fat in a single procedure, while Belkyra® works over a series of treatments with progressive improvement.
What happens during a Belkyra® treatment?

Your appointment includes assessment and marking of the treatment area, cleansing, and optional numbing for comfort. Small amounts of deoxycholic acid are injected using a fine needle in a precise grid pattern. Treatment typically takes 15–30 minutes. You may feel warmth, stinging, or pressure during injections.
Am I a good candidate for Belkyra®?

You may be a good candidate if you have bothersome fullness under the chin, adequate skin elasticity, and are generally healthy. Belkyra® is not suitable for everyone—other causes of neck fullness (such as loose skin, muscle banding, or structural anatomy) must be ruled out during consultation.

Is Belkyra® safe?

Belkyra® has been extensively studied and approved by Health Canada and the FDA. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, firmness, and numbness. Rare risks include temporary nerve irritation affecting the lower lip or swallowing discomfort related to swelling. Dr. Copeland will review all risks and warning signs in detail before treatment.
What should I expect after treatment?

Significant swelling under the chin is expected and normal, especially after the first few sessions. Swelling often peaks within the first few days and gradually subsides over 1–2 weeks. Bruising and firmness are common but temporary. Most patients resume normal activities within a day or two.
When will I see results, and how long do they last?

Results appear gradually as fat cells are cleared. Early improvement may be seen at 4–6 weeks, with optimal results developing after 2–4 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Once the desired result is achieved, treated fat cells are permanently removed, though weight changes can still affect overall contour.
