Getting the Most from Your Cosmetic Treatments
By Dr. Copeland
Experienced injectors rely on medical training, scientific knowledge, experience, and artistry — along with a detailed understanding of facial anatomy — to guide recommendations that are appropriate for each individual. While this is essential, optimal aesthetic outcomes also depend on the trust and partnership established between doctor and patient.
Experienced injectors understand what can realistically be achieved over time and will honestly advise when expectations may be unrealistic, or when a non-surgical approach is no longer the best option. Having that level of trust in your physician’s guidance helps patients achieve the most natural and lasting results from aesthetic treatments.
Over more than two decades of performing cosmetic treatments, I have learned that this partnership is one of the most important factors in achieving both natural results and true patient satisfaction.
Communication Matters
One of the most valuable things a patient can bring to a consultation is clarity about their goals and a willingness to listen and work collaboratively toward realistic outcomes.
Photos can sometimes help illustrate general preferences, but attempting to recreate someone else’s face is rarely realistic. Every face is unique, and the best results come from treatments designed specifically for a patient’s own features.
It is also very important to inform the physician about all previous treatments, including where and when they were performed and what products were used. Having a complete and accurate treatment history allows the physician to make the safest and most appropriate decisions moving forward.
Aesthetic Medicine Works Best as a
Process
A common misconception is that a single visit should produce the final result. In reality, aesthetic medicine works more like fitness training. It’s a bit like expecting lasting fitness improvements after one trip to the gym using only one piece of equipment. The best outcomes are usually achieved through a thoughtful combination of treatments, applied gradually and strategically over time. Understanding that, our approach is to begin with the most meaningful modality first — that aligns with your goals and budget — and go from there.
Occasionally, patients judge the outcome after a single treatment and assume the result is final. This is especially true with injectable fillers. With patience and planning, optimal results can be achieved through a series of carefully considered steps.
Every Face Has Limits
Responsible physicians will always be honest about what can and cannot be achieved. Age, medical conditions, anatomy, skin quality, and previous treatments all influence what is realistically possible.
Sometimes this means recommending less, or more, treatment than expected—or occasionally advising against treatment altogether. While that may not always be the answer someone hopes for, thoughtful guidance helps prevent over-treatment and protects long-term results.
A Partnership
Aesthetic treatments are not about stopping time. Aging continues for all of us, but thoughtful care can help us age well and look our best along the way.
And, that brings us back to an interesting question:
“Who is the “perfect” patient?“
The 'perfect' patient isn’t defined by appearance, and is not someone chasing dramatic change or instant transformation. It is the patient who understands the process, communicates openly, trusts, and works collaboratively with their physician over time.
“And why does it matter?”
The best aesthetic outcomes result when expertise and collaboration come together — careful planning, realistic expectations, and trust between physician and patient — not from a single treatment or appointment.
In the end, the goal is never to change who you
are — it’s simply to help you look like the best version of yourself.
Always natural. Always you.
